Missionary of the Month

Jonathan and Erin Mathews

Jonathan and Erin are church planting in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  They will be taking a short furlough soon and will be coming to report on their work early next year.
Here is a recent prayer update:
What do you think of when you hear the word “oasis”? Merriam-Webster defines oasis as “a fertile or green area in an arid region (as a desert), or something that provides refuge, relief, or pleasant contrast.” To paraphrase that definition we could say that an oasis is “a source of life in the middle of a deadly desert.”
Our current church-plant decided on “Oasis Church” for a name because they wanted the church to be the life of Christ lived out in the midst of the spiritually dead world. The world is spiritually dead everyone, some places more than others, but to understand the significance of the church name to these people you need to understand a little about where they live.
Oasis Church is inserted in one of the most notoriously dangerous districts in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Sao Paulo, Brazil boasts a greater regional population of nearly 30 million people, and the within this region the East Zone of the city is the most populous. Out to the periphery of the East Zone is a group of notoriously bad districts, the worst of which is Cidade Tiradentes (CT). CT is nowhere as bad today as it once was, but the socio-cultural stigma of fear and hopelessness remains.

Hymn of the Month
Holy Child
Holy Child who chose the hearts of men
To be His favored home
Leaving heaven's gates for Bethlehem
God came to call His own
Now to us the highest King is born
Behold the Royal Son
Glory kneels to mend all that is torn
The promised Child has come
May the gift of God amaze us still
The triumph of all time
As His child I kneel to Heaven's will
To make His purpose mine
Though this road be scarred with trial and pain
It's paved with lavish grace
Knowing Him will be my greatest gain
My hope the Savior's face

Verse of the Month
Luke 1:49
For he that is mighty hath done to me
great things; and holy is his name.

Missionary of the Month
Daniel and Sarah Ruley
Dear Friends,
We are excited to announce that in January there will be a new Ruley.  Sarah is due at the end of January and Andrew is very excited to be a big brother.  Sarah's pregnancy has made traveling more of a challenge over the last several months, but God has been gracious and the baby is doing well.  In just a few short weeks we will find out whether it is a boy or a girl.  Stay Tuned!!
We were blessed to reconnect with our mentors the Kettlewells during the BMM Annual Conference this summer. We spent a wonderful time discussing our future ministy in Brazil.  We are truly blessed to have such wonderful mentors, and we look forward to continuing to learn from their knowledge and experience.  Daniel was particularly excited to learn more about the Bible Training Centers that have been very effective in training new Brazilian leadership.

God has truly protected us and blessed us this summer.  We had a wonderful VBS in Michigan and numerous other opportunities to share our ministry and to serve.  We appreciate your prayers for the busy fall that is ahead of us.  We are greatly burdened to reach Brazil in the spring of 2014.

In Christ,

Daniel, Sarah, and Andrew Ruley

Hymn of the Month

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!
